Day 70 - Klamath, CA to Willits, CA
Leaving Klamath River. Not unlike many places that we have stayed, we came away from this location feeling like we could have stayed much longer and hoping to come back someday.
Still amongst the tall trees, we made a few stops to get out and hike throughout the National park. There was a good parking spot here next to one of the many trailheads so we got out for a short hike.
I love this image as it provides the scale and perspective of the massive giant redwoods. The RV is 12' tall and 32' long.
The many ferns were on display during our short hike.
At the south end of the National park, there was another visitor center located right next to the ocean. The black sand beach was great and we could not miss an opportunity to carve our marker into the sand.
As we headed south, the highway goes in and out of the park a few times. Www were driving slow so we had a chance to look around and stop if we wanted to. Soon,, we saw a sign for "The Big Tree" so we stopped and took a very short hike from the parking lot to the tree.
A little further south and we took a turn off of the main highway through The Avenue of the Giants. This was a very windy road with trees that nestled right up next to the road not giving vehicles like ours much room for error.
In the town of Willits, we found a very popular KOA. We had not thought about it much until this time, but we left the house so long ago that it had not dawned on us that most kids were now out of school and families were in summer vacation mode. We were actually lucky to get a spot here.
We quickly got to dinner and rooted hot dogs in the fire.
While the cobbler was cooking in the dutch oven, we finished off the evening playing pool in the upstairs clubhouse and of course settling in by the fire.
