We set an alarm to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic. It was beautiful! And also chilly because it was so windy. As soon as the sun was up, we headed back for coffee and cocoa.

There was a lot to see today, so we had to move quickly. First stop was Cape Hatteras Light. Mike and the kids walked to the top. I toured the museum instead of climbing the 250+ stairs. Mike has been intrigued by lighthouses since he did his thesis project in college.

From the top of Cape Hatteras light the you can see the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current crash into one another creating waves that are perpendicular to the coast!

After our stop at Cape Hatteras, we parked at a spot on the dunes to eat lunch and collect more shells. It was so windy there were wind surfers in every direction. We loved the rippled patterns the wind left in the sand.

Our next stop was Bodie Island Light. This is a sister lighthouse to Pigeon Point in Pescadero, California, the light station that Mike used for his thesis. You have to buy time slotted tickets to climb this lighthouse and we couldn't wait 1 1/2 hours for our turn, so we just looked from the outside and the ranger let us in to the bottom of the stairs.

Just a bit further north we stopped at Kitty Hawk. We learned a little bit about Orville and Wilber. The hills here and the winds provided the perfect spot for these brothers to test their plane.

We had a few more hours of driving so we stopped at a Chick-fil-A in Virginia and ate in the parking lot. The kids were thrilled to have dinner entertainment as we watched a girl handcuffed for shoplifting. The police officers, the store employee, and the alleged thief were in front of the store for the entire time we were eating. The girl was put in and taken out of the police car 2 or 3 different times. A friend or family member arrived and tried to defuse the situation. Later, a woman who appeared to be her mother arrived and seemed to want the police to take the girl away. She really chewed out the obstinate girl. In the end, the girl got in her mother's car and left just as we were ready to get back on the road. We pulled into our campsite in Williamsburg just as the sun was setting.
